‘ΗΛΙΟΔΩΡΟΝ’ ANNIVERSARY PROJECT
Celebrating 5 years of creativity and wonder.
A creative, collaborative project that invites twelve artists, creatives and wellness practitioners to create a unique one-of-a-kind or limited-edition design or artwork, or an immersive experience inspired by the studio's symbols -the SUN and the EGG- and their symbolisms.

The theme is open to interpretation, giving each participant the space to approach it in their own unique way. Everyone has been encouraged to explore what my dear friend, artist and academic Ellie Tsatsou Palmer describes as ‘the oceanic feeling’ (explore the concept here). This surrender to wonder guides my entire practice within the studio's realm and beyond. Through her Integrated Creativity project, which stems from her life's work, Ellie validated and reinforced -in the most liberating, transformative way- my gut feeling that joy is worth pursuing.
The participants have been invited to explore 'ΗΛΙΟΔΩΡΟΝ' through this prism.
The project spans three and a half months and features two iterations: a digital one, ongoing, and a physical one: an exhibition event taking place on the 25th & 26th of September. At this stage, everyone is sharing documentation of the creative process and reflections. Honouring the creative practice, the slow local creation that can take from hours to months, the singularity of things made by hand, the mindful act of being present, the wisdom of listening to your body.

I am beyond humbled and grateful for everything these humans have shaped and shared so far with me for this project.
The work is intimate, truthful, cathartic. It's been an immense honour, and I cannot wait to witness the journey.

“Η θάλασσα με γοητεύει γιατί μου θυμίζει πως οι πιο ουσιαστικές δυνάμεις της ζωής είναι εκείνες που δεν φαίνονται.
Το φως που γίνεται ζωή. Οι αόρατες σχέσεις που κρατούν ολόκληρους κόσμους ζωντανούς. Η ενέργεια που κυκλοφορεί σιωπηλά και μεταμορφώνει τα πάντα.
Δεν με γοητεύει γιατί θέλω να την εξηγήσω. Με γοητεύει γιατί μου θυμίζει πως εκεί υπάρχει η εμπιστοσύνη προς το άγνωστο.
Από αυτή τη σκέψη γεννήθηκαν αυτά τα έργα.
Από την αίσθηση πως κάθε τέλος κρύβει μέσα του την πιθανότητα μιας νέας αρχής. Πως όλα όσα υπάρχουν γύρω μας συνδέονται με τρόπους αόρατους αλλά ουσιαστικούς. Πως ο ένας αφήνει πάντα κάτι μέσα στον άλλον, και αυτή η αόρατη συνέχεια είναι που κάνει τη ζωή να εξελίσσεται.
Η δημιουργία αυτής της σειράς έγινε ένας τρόπος να κρατήσω αυτή την ιδέα απαλά στα χέρια μου. Να τιμώ ό,τι μπορώ να δω, αλλά και ό,τι δε μπορώ.
Γι’ αυτό γιορτάζουμε.
Την παρουσία. Την ύπαρξη. Εσένα.
Γιατί όσα μας κρατούν πραγματικά ζωντανούς, δεν είναι ποτέ δεδομένα.”

“Ηλιοτρόπια. Τα ηλιοτρόπια είχαν πάντα μέσα μου έναν αντίστροφο συμβολισμό. Συμβόλιζαν ένα μεγάλο αποχαιρετισμό, συμβόλιζαν πόνο και απώλεια. Όταν όμως είχα την τιμή να συμμετάσχω στο project « Hλιόδωρον» οι συμβολισμοί που αυτό εμπεριέχει με οδήγησαν στο να ζωγραφίσω ηλιοτρόπια. Τα δικά σου ηλιοτρόπια. Με τα χρώματα σου.
Και καθώς ζωγράφιζα, συνειδητοποίησα πως μέσα από σένα, τα ηλιοτρόπια απέκτησαν επιτέλους για μένα τον αληθινό τους συμβολισμό.
Εμπεριέχουν ότι ακριβώς εύχομαι για σένα, το οποίο αντανακλά και η προσωπικότητα σου και κατ’ επέκτασιν και η δουλειά σου. Σου χαρίζω λοιπόν αυτά τα ηλιοτρόπια , γεμάτα φως, ζεστασιά , αισιοδοξία , αφοσίωση , θαυμασμό , δύναμη και εκτίμηση και σου εύχομαι μέσα από την καρδιά μου, όλα αυτά να σε ακολουθούν για πάντα τόσο στην επαγγελματική σου ζωή, όσο και στην προσωπική.”

«Ήλιος και θάλασσα, δύο λέξεις, δύο αισθήσεις άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένες μεταξύ τους, αλληλένδετες και πάντα το ίδιο μαγικές. Δύο λέξεις που έχω άμεσα συνδεδεμένες με όλα τα καλοκαίρια των παιδικών μας χρόνων.
Ήταν το πρώτο πράγμα που μου ήρθε στο μυαλό όχι μόνο για τις άπειρες ώρες που περνούσαμε κάτω από τον ήλιο πλατσουρίζοντας, αλλά και για όλες τις στιγμές έμπνευσης και δημιουργίας που σποράκι σποράκι μας φύτευε η Ανθήλη στο μυαλουδάκι, που συνεχίζουν να ανθίζουν μέχρι σήμερα. Και όλα τα υπέροχα φαγητάκια που μας τάιζε η γιαγιά όσο εμείς ζωγραφίζαμε σε χαρτιά, πατώματα, τοίχους και κοχύλια.
Όλα εκείνα τα καλοκαίρια είχαν αίσθηση ήλιου και θάλασσας κάθε στιγμή της ημέρας για τρεις μήνες τον χρόνο. Απόλυτη αγαλλίαση, ξεγνοιασιά, ελευθερία και φως. Ένα συναίσθημα που ακόμα και τώρα, κάτω από διαφορετικές πλέον συνθήκες και δεδομένα, είναι πάντα η αίσθηση που με καταβάλλει σε κάθε βουτιά. Το ψάχνω σε κάθε μικρή στιγμή που μπορεί να με ταξιδέψει πίσω σε εκείνες τις μέρες.
Αντλώντας λοιπόν έμπνευση από αυτό, θα χρησιμοποιήσω ως βάση μου όλα τα αγαπημένα μου σεμεδάκια της γιαγιάς, τα οποία θα ραφτούν σαν patchwork και θα βαφτούν με φλούδες κρεμμυδιών, καθώς και λουλούδια από την αυλή του σπιτιού στο Πευκοχώρι.Θα στολιστεί με κάποια κεντήματα και λέξεις και, τέλος, στο κέντρο του έργου, θα υπάρχει ένα σεμεδάκι βαμμένο μπλε, συμβολίζοντας τον πυρήνα της δημιουργίας που πιστεύω ότι ξεκίνησε να καλλιεργείται εκείνα τα χρόνια.
Ένας πυρήνας που τον πήρες, τον άλλαξες, τον έφερες στα μέτρα σου και τον άνοιξες για να χωρέσεις και να αγκαλιάσεις όλους αυτούς τους υπέροχους ανθρώπους που σε περιτριγυρίζουν σήμερα, που συνεχίζουν να τροφοδοτούν τη δημιουργικότητά σου κάθε μέρα και από λίγο, ένα σποράκι την φορά, ένα λουλουδάκι τη φορά. Εύχομαι πάντα να ανθίζεις.»

«Ενθουσιάστηκα αμέσως με το project της Δέσποινας. Χωρίς να έχω καν διαβάσει την παρουσίαση της μου ήρθε αμέσως στο μυαλό ένας ήλιος. Μου αρέσει πολύ́ το λογότυπο της Δέσποινας, αυτή η μπάλα φωτιάς που είναι diffused και χωρίς όρια. Ήθελα αμέσως να το μετατρέψω σε έναν ήλιο δουλεμένο όπως η συλλογή By The Pool.
Θα έχει ανώμαλες ακτίνες προς όλες της κατευθύνσεις. Δε μπορώ να το σχεδιάσω, γιατί θα βγει οργανικά τη στιγμή που θα κολλάω τα στοιχεία.
Δεν είναι τυχαίο που η Δέσποινα διάλεξε τον ήλιο για λογότυπο, είναι μια φωτεινή και ζεστή παρουσία στη ζωή, γεμάτη ενέργεια για δημιουργικότητα.»

“Despina invited us to be inspired by her studio’s distinctive symbols: the sun and the egg. I chose the egg. An egg is a vessel.
It holds a life before that life has a name.
It carries patience: the long, unhurried wait for a thing to form.
It carries care: the instinct to keep what is forming safe until it’s time.
And then the time comes, and it does not come gently.
To be born, a thing has to be rebellious. It has to crack.
What comes out comes out raw and whole and unrepeatable: one force, one move, out into the world, demanding to be seen, heard, held.
The crack is where the truest version of a self is let out.
This is the question KONTAIN keeps asking: can an object carry a reality?
A vessel contains something. So does a hand. So does an egg.
A special note to Despina, the woman that I can proudly call a best friend and an unlimited source of inspiration:
Five years is a long time to keep choosing what is right over what is easy. That is what I have watched you do, in the big decisions and the small ones, every day. You move through the world thinking about everyone in it: people, nature, every living thing. Never in terms of yourself, always in terms of the long run and the balance that keeps existence whole. You listen to your own inner voice and share it back with us in such clarity that we hear our own more. Nothing is fine to you unless it has a purpose. Everything carries meaning. You empower without asking anything back. You hold space for every world and every reality. You open roads. What you protect is the right of every being to exist as it is, and I don't know a greater value than that.
My part in this project only exists because of you. You gave me the room to let out a side of myself I had never shown the world in a “finished” way. That your hands and your world are enough, and that someone out there will truly see “you”. You see inside people while they are blind or afraid to look inside themselves.
Realities are endless. This is one of them.”
